Isotope Ratio Monitoring GC/MS (irm-GC/MS) measurement of the delta13C content of the methyl esters of fatty acids (FAME) has been used to study natural food webs and, with the use of highly delta13C –enriched precursors, fatty acid metabolism in vivo. The use of biolabeled fatty acids to study metabolism is a relatively new technique which combines tracer methodology with natural abundance measurements by using naturally labeled compounds as tracers.
