Targeted protein quantification is frequently applied to large sample sets to verify large numbers of targets such as putative biomarkers identified from earlier discovery experiments. It is also used to analyze protein–protein interaction networks in biological systems as part of signaling pathway studies. Selected-reaction monitoring (SRM) on triple quadrupole mass spectrometers has traditionally been considered the “gold standard” for targeted protein quantification.
