Multiple Mass Defect Filtering (MMDF) is a simple and powerful data reduction tool within Thermo Scientific MetWorks metabolite identification software. Combined with the superior high resolution and accurate mass data quality from the Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap mass analyzer, MMDF uncovers metabolites of interest quickly and confidently, even when they’re 3-4 orders of magnitude less abundant than the background matrix ions.
Enabled by the high resolving power of the LTQ Orbitrap, the use of MMDF dramatically reduces the data processing time by filtering out the vast majority of matrix-related background ions, which may share the same nominal mass as potential metabolites. This allows users to set low threshold values during data processing so that metabolites at very low levels can be easily identified. The resulting chromatogram is very accurate and specific because it is based on exact mass and mass deficiencies, which are highly specific to each parent drug compound of interest.
