SAN JOSE, Calif. - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today introduced the Thermo Scientific PAiNACEA suite of solutions, the first commercial offering of integrated liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) solutions optimized for the analysis of pain management drugs in forensic toxicology laboratories. The suite is designed to maximize sample throughput, improve turnaround time and reduce overall analysis cost, without compromising data quality.
Currently the analysis of pain management drugs, such as benzodiazepines, opiates, synthetic opioids, alcohol biomarkers and medical drugs of abuse, involves the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or LC-MS methods to confirm positive results obtained from screening methodologies such as immunoassays.
LC/MS technology offers forensic toxicology laboratories unsurpassed speed and accuracy compared to these traditional methods. Using the PAiNACEA LC-MS suite of solutions, it is possible to screen, confirm and quantitate a large number of drugs and metabolites using a single high throughput analytical system and, in many cases, a single analytical run. LC-MS also enables expansion of testing panels to accommodate analysis of new drug targets and their metabolites without extensive method development. For the forensic toxicology laboratory, these attributes are designed to reduce cost, improve turnaround time and increase confidence in analytical results.
The PAiNACEA LC-MS suite of solutions integrates sample preparation, LC separation and MS detection with performance-verified methods, support and financing. To meet budgetary and throughput needs, the suite of solutions offers a choice of expandable front-end systems from ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) to automated online sample preparation and multiplexing with the Thermo Scientific Transcend system. The unique multiplexing technology offered by the Transcend system enables laboratories to achieve a four-fold increase in sample throughput. Thermo Scientific TurboFlow technology reduces time spent on sample preparation by up to 95 percent.
The PAiNACEA suite of solutions also offers laboratories a choice of the Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum Access MAX triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometer or the Thermo Scientific Exactive ultrahigh resolution accurate mass (HRAM) high performance benchtop mass spectrometer powered by Orbitrap technology. HRAM full-scan mass-spectral information makes it possible to screen, confirm and quantitate target and non-target compounds in a single analytical run. Minimal to no method development time is required. Selected reaction monitoring (SRM) solutions, available from the Thermo Scientific TSQ Series triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometers, offer increased analytical speed, sensitivity and specificity for quantitative applications.
