There are many variants of the Orbitrap analyze. Here I would like to discuss in detail just one variant - so-called compact orbitrap. Actually, it is not that different from the standard trap- it is just 1.5 times smaller while the central electrode is relatively thicker. However, this scaling down means that the entrance aperture reduced more than twice in cross-section and therefore we could expect a similar loss of sensitivity. We simply could not afford to lose on sensitivity, so a miniature lens system was developed to focus ions into a much smaller spot.
