Today’s laboratories are racing to keep up with an increasingly battery-powered world. From electric vehicles to handheld electronics, there’s a high demand for cleaner, healthier and safer batteries for tomorrow’s innovations.

Yet sustainability efforts in battery development aren’t just a national goal — it’s a global vision. As allies in adopting sustainable efforts, these six green initiatives will empower the energy revolution worldwide.

U.S. “Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act” – The U.S. Department of Energy is investing $3 billion to strengthen the supply chain of advanced batteries and energy storage. Efforts include:

  • Closing supply chain disruptions by accelerating domestic battery production
  • Creating new and expanded battery manufacturing and recycling
  • Supporting the research of second-life applications for used lithium-ion batteries

Batteries-Continuum-Image.pngEU “The Green Deal” – The European Green Deal will transform the EU into a resource-efficient, climate-neutral continent. The work aims to:

  • Reduce net emissions of greenhouse gases by at least 55 percent by 2030
  • Harness low-emission technologies and sustainable products and services
  • Reorient toward a sustainable future with green partnerships and research

Singapore “Green Plan 2030” – This long-term net-zero emissions initiative is influenced by nature, sustainable living, a green economy and a resilient future. Key targets include:

  • Quadrupling solar energy development by 2025
  • Reducing waste sent to landfills and investing in recycling technologies
  • Implementing only clean-energy and electric vehicles starting in 2030

China “New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan” – This plan is a strategic, top-level policy for the development of comprehensive and fully-integrated battery-operated vehicles. Efforts aim to:

  • Promote and guide sustainable efforts in battery and clean-energy vehicle development
  • Improve core technologies and foster technological innovation for vehicle batteries, materials and more
  • Deepen regulatory reforms and integrate into global industrial value chains

India “Green Growth Imperative” – India’s pursuit of decarbonation and economic development is a sequenced approach, with a main goal to provide fairer access to energy. The initiative strives to:

  • Reduce emissions, ensure renewable energy sources and create an additional carbon sink
  • Invest in large-scale sustainable manufacturing and infrastructure
  • Over time, electrify transportation and expand cleaner electricity access

Japan “The 2050 Plan” – This strategic plan strives to reduce emissions and become carbon neutral by 2050, while also influencing technological innovation. Key targets include:

  • Electric passenger vehicles will account for 100 percent of all new vehicle sales by 2035
  • Increasing the domestic production of in-vehicle batteries
  • Dramatic charging and refueling infrastructure targets, installing 150,000 charging units for public use
