Shotgun proteomics requires mass spectrometric instrumentation with high sequencing speed, sensitivity and resolution. The Orbitrap analyzer provides high resolution in a compact format and is usually combined with a linear ion trap. Here, we instead interface a quadrupole for very fast mass selection to the Orbitrap analzyer and thereby extend the Orbitrap family by a high-performance benchtop instrument.
