Hello,
The analytical task is to measure anions and cations (not transition metals) with IC from plating bath solutions.
This solutions contains high level of transition metals, what could make problems in column, suppressor.
Do somebody have experience about this type of sample IC analysis?
I thinking about sample preparation, matrix elimination or just make the right dilution to decrese the matrix concentration to prevent the consumables? What could be the right system configuration for routine analysis in industrial area?
Thank you if someone shares their experience.
Best regards,
Peter

@peterjakab, excellent question and the notebook will be a good start. The approach would be slightly different dependent on the type of plating baths. I have worked with a few different types and used different approaches.
- I have used a transition metal trap off-line with OnGuard II M (transition metals) or H (alkaline earth and transition metals): https://assets.thermofisher.com/TFS-Assets/CMD/Specification-Sheets/PS-70628-OnGuard-II-PS70628-EN.p...
- a metal trap in-line InGuard H or Na but they will get rid of Alkaline Earth and transition metals: https://assets.thermofisher.com/TFS-Assets/CMD/Specification-Sheets/83742-DS-InGuard-Cartridges-25Ja...
- a metal guard to trap the transition metals with an extra valve (check out page 9): https://www.thermofisher.com/document-connect/document-connect.html?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.thermof...
So, question is what sort of level are the anions and cations you want you quantify & what level are the transition metals & what are they?
This is just a starter 🙂.

@peterjakab - I will be sure the team gets a chance to review and see if anyone can comment on this for you. Hoping we can hear some experiences from community members for you also! @The_Ion_Lady and @chris-shevlin would you be able to help me welcome peterjakab?

Hi Peter - I have inquired with our R&D and Application teams to find who has the most experience with plating bath solutions. When I hear back I will have them get in touch with you. I am not sure what your exact application is for plating but we do have this application compendium for analyses in semiconductor manufacturing. Page 38 starts the section about plating baths. Are any of these similar to what you are doing in your lab?
If you need the link emailed to you, please email me at chris.shevlin@thermofisher.com and I will send it to you directly.

Hi Chris
I could open the notebook. It's new for me, looks very useful, gonna check it!
Thank you your help!

@The_Ion_Lady simpathic options to remove metal residue!
I think during the method developements, the results will show whitch will be the good way - The off-line sample preparton, the online, or don't care about the sample preparation and change the columns after X number of sample when we see the column capacity and performance decrease. So good to be an extra valve for online matrix removal, if needed. I tried to find is there any rule of thumb, what the maximum torelable concentration for transition metals in the sample when allowed to direct inject.
Anyway I would like to say thank you, your help and time to answer me!
🙂
Have a nice day

@peterjakab , just for your information you can check on columns, guards and traps capacity from the manual so you can compare.
For IonPac column comparison, it's easier to look at the selection guide:
