Andreas Pack is a professor for isotope geology at the University of Göttingen, focusing on high precision measurements of oxygen isotope ratios in rocks, minerals and water samples.
One application is to measure the isotope ratios in extraterrestrial samples in meteorites coming from far away in the solar system. With the oxygen isotopes he can identify these materials and their source bodies. Another application is paleo temperature determination, to analyze rocks that have been precipitated from seawater and are now telling us about the temperature 200 million or 3 billion years ago. His group is equipped with three different Thermo Scientific gas source mass spectrometers.
