Founded in June 2013, the Department of Toxicology at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital offers comprehensive analytical and interpretive services. Dr Alex Lawson, Senior Clinical Biochemist & Toxicologist, of Birmingham Heartlands Hospital recently added trace metal analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for a broad range of analytes in a variety of matrices to support ongoing clinical research. Dr Lawson describes where he sees ICPMS complementing other analytical and genomic techniques to better understand the cause and evolution of common disease areas such as cancer, type 2 diabetes.
