processWhenever I hop in my car and start out to a new destination, one of the first things I’ll do is turn toward software to help me find my way. Luckily, I, like most of us, carry a high-powered computer in my pocket in the form of a smartphone. This software-enabled device is able, with great precision, to monitor the progress to my destination and suggest modifications to my route depending on road conditions to assure that I get to my destination in the most efficient path possible, saving me both time and money. An alert will flash if I happen to exceed the speed limit, helping ensure the safety of those around me and avoiding any fines for such excess that I might have otherwise incurred. I am also notified if there are potential hazards along the way that could cause damage to my vehicle or prevent me from reaching my destination safely.

In the same way, an app on my phone can empower me to get the most out of my drives, there is a tool available that provides a continuous stream of information that can be used to optimize the efficiency of industrial processes, increasing profitability by maximizing yields. It can also alert you to the presence of unwanted byproducts, harmful contaminants, such as corrosives, or the presence of pollutants in waste streams that could result in fines if discharge limits are exceeded. I’m referring to the Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ Integral™ Process Analytical system. It consists of highly customizable modules that can be configured to aid exploratory R&D work and then can be easily adapted for progression from pilot plant to full-scale production. Continuous monitoring with on-line liquid chromatography lets you detect process variations much sooner than you could by grabbing sporadic samples and delivering them to a distant lab. You are also able to avoid the risk of introducing contamination into your process vessel or the sample itself, which would generate misleading results. Dionex Integral systems support both ion chromatography (IC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) instruments, giving you several options for multicomponent analysis that provide more detail to make critical process decisions than can be obtained from a single component or bulk property. Up to 21 process streams can be sampled with the Stream Selector (SS) module, while the automated sample preparation capabilities of the Sample Preparer (SP) module include dilution, matrix elimination, concentration, and filtration, providing the ability to analyze the most challenging of matrices and reach trace level detection limits. These modules can be either freestanding in a lab or pilot setting or incorporated into Analyzer Enclosure (AE) or Liquid Enclosure (LE) modules that provide environmental protection and industrial compliance.

All of this hardware is controlled by Thermo Scientific™ Chromeleon™ 7 Process Analyzer (PA) software, which is based on the industry-leading Thermo Scientific™ Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS) software platform.  There is no need to relearn software because it stays with you as you transition from the lab into the plant. Chromeleon 7 PA software incorporates a unique analyzer interface that expands the ability to configure, control, monitor, and report data from multiple IC or HPLC systems configured for continuous monitoring.

If you want to smooth out some of the bumps along the path to optimizing process profitability, consider what the Dionex Integral Process Analyzer system has to offer.
