We’ve all been there. It’s the first of the month and you have a pile of bills waiting to be paid. The kids are in bed and you sit down at your computer to get them paid before you finish washing dishes and folding laundry. You dread this day each month, as you know that each utility and credit card company has its own complicated user interface and its own process for completing the “e-bill” payment process.
Don’t you wish you could just log into a single website, click a single, magical button that lets you pay all your bills on the dates they’re due, then get a lovely message that reads:

Luckily, I get to work with the Thermo Scientific™
Qtegra™ Intelligent Scientific Data Solution™ Software when I run my
Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ instruments. I can walk into the lab every single day and get from instrument warm-up to data reporting with 5 simple clicks. Don’t believe me? Let me prove it. Read on!
Click 1: Open the Software
Just kidding. This one’s obvious.
Click 1 (for real this time): Open Your Instrument Method
In the Qtegra software, this is called a LabBook. Why? Because it’s just like the laboratory notebook you use in the lab. It contains all the details that are relevant to your experiment, just like your LabBook contains all the instrument parameters, sample information and data collection and reporting parameters that are relevant to your application.
Click 2: Push the Get Ready Button
Ahhhhhh the wonderful “Get Ready” button. With a single click, the Get Ready button communicates with the instrument to start the peristaltic pump, ignite the plasma, allow it to warm up and do a performance check. In the time it takes you to prepare your calibration standards and load them into the autosampler, the instrument has done everything it needed to do to be prepared for the day’s analysis.
Click 3: Load Your Sample Information
I’m not talking about the laborious task of loading instrument parameters or entering in calibration and QC check standard information. That’s all stored in the LabBook that you’ve already opened. I’m just talking about your day-to-day samples here. The software is flexible, so you can either type your sample names in one by one, or you can import your entire sample from an external spreadsheet.
Click 4: Analyze Your Samples
Once your samples are added to the sample queue, you’re ready to start your analysis. With a single click, you’re off and running….just don’t forget to load your solutions into the autosampler.
Click 5: Export Your Data
Whether you want your data electronically or in hard copy, data reporting can be done with a single button click. Export your data into one of our many pre-loaded report templates, create your own report template from scratch, or do a little bit of both!
Click 6:
There is no step 6! It’s a 5-step process! Didn’t you read the title of this post?
There’s a lot to like about iCAP….including the software.
